Hubei Key Laboratory of Bioinorganic Chemistry & Materia Medica

Hubei Key Laboratory of Bioinorganic Chemistry & Materia Medica relies on the school of Chemistry and Chemical engineering in Huazhong University of Science and Technology. It also integrates related sources of National Engineering Research Center for Nanomedicine. The Laboratory was decided to be a construction project in December 2004, and passed the assessment and acceptance of Science and Technology Agency and Education Agency of Hubei province in December 2008. There are 26 constant staffs (16 Professors, 9 associate professors) in the laboratory, including "973" Project Chief Scientist 1 people, New Century Excellent Talent from Ministry of Education of China 2 people.

The Laboratory centres on the hot topics of Bioinorganic Chemistry, and combines with the characteristics of HUBEI Province’s resources and environment. It combines the fundamental researches with application development in the area of bioinorganic chemistry and medicine to serve the development of science and technology as well as economic construction of Hubei Province. The major research directions include: biological function and application of trace elements; metalloenzyme and biomimetic catalysis; cellular inorganic chemistry; nanomedicine.

In recent 5 years, the laboratory undertake and complete the international, national, provincial and enterprises more than 80 projects, a total of more than 35 million yuan funding, including the major national scientific research projects, 973 projects, national natural science foundation, 863 projects of major projects, international cooperation projects. We have published over 250 SCI papers, and won the national invention patent (authorized) more than 30 items. In addition, we won achievement awards of provincial level and ministry level for many times and were awarded “Nature Science Foundation of Hubei Province Innovation Team”. We hosted the first, the seventh conference on bioinorganic chemistry, the first International Symposium on Applied Bioinorganic Chemistry, the 14th International Symposium on Trace Elements in Man and Animals, and the first, the second China-South Korea Joint Seminar on Selenium in Biology and Medicine. The laboratory has taken the lead in developing selenium-enriched yeast drug in our country. On the basis of the research on the relationship between selenium and reactive oxygen species, we have developed two eye drops with authorization by SFDA containing trace element, which could prevent adolescent myopia and senile cataract, and the drugs have been put into market. The laboratory earlier engaged in the research of nano drug in our country, put forward a series of research and development thought for modernization of Chinese Traditional Medicine. Oral insulin spray developed by the laboratory using nanotechnology reaches international advanced level and has completed phase III clinical trials at present. Hydroxyethyl starch HES200/0.5 is common plasma expander in surgery. The laboratory has done deep research on new synthesis technics of HES200/0.5, and obtained a complete set of technology system with independent intellectual property rights. The product has been approved by SFDA, been put into production with an annual output of 100,000 tons, and been exported to South of Korea, Russia, India, and so on, more than 10 countries.
