On June 8, HUST-NTU Academic Lecture Series was successfully held in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, HUST. At the invitation of Prof. Wang Yan of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering HUST, Wang Rong, Full Professor and President’s Chair of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore, gave an invited lecture entitled “Development of Novel Reverse Osmosis and Forward Osmosis Membranes: from Lab Study to Commercialization”. The lecture was hosted by Prof. Wang Yan, and more than 70 students and researchers from universities such as Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Nankai University and other domestic universities participated online.

In this lecture, Prof. Wang Rong presented the latest R&D in RO and FO membranes at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). She introduced the analyses of desired characteristics of RO/FO membranes, fabrication of novel RO/FO membranes by incorporating aquaporin water channel proteins and special bio-molecules into the membranes, and performance evaluation under different application scenarios. In the end, she stated that the scale-up productions of newly developed RO/FO membranes were demonstrated via collaborating with industrial partners.

During the Q&A part, Prof. Wang Rong exchanged ideas with the participants, and had a heated discussion on hot research issues such as membrane performance optimization with Prof. Wang Yan from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Han Gang from Nankai University and students from related research groups, providing new research ideas and directions to them in the field of membranes.
Prof. Wang Rong is a Full Professor and President's Chair at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. She holds the position of Director, Singapore Membrane Technology Centre (SMTC) at NEWRI, NTU. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore, and the founding President of Membrane Society in Singapore (MEMSIS). She is also the President of Aseanian Membrane Society (AMS) currently. She served as the Chair of the School of CEE, NTU from 2014 to 2020. Prof. Wang has over 30 years of experience in Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Water and Energy related research and innovation. She has over 300 SCI tracked journal publications (citations: >20,900 and h-index: 81 @Web of Science). She is the inventor of 30 patents/technical disclosures for novel membrane fabrication. Her inventions led to the setup of three membrane-based spin-off companies in Singapore.
