2. Course description and goals

Organic chemistry is a subject that studies the properties, synthesis and reactions of organic compounds. It is one of the important basic courses in chemistry, biochemistry and the medical subjects. This course is carried out as followed:

1. To emphasize the "three foundations" (basic theory, basic knowledge, basic operation skills) to actively cultivate students' self-learning ability, innovation ability, observation ability, analysis and problem solving ability, developing a good style of study for seeking truth from facts.

2. To help students acquire the necessary basic knowledge of organic chemistry to understand the development frontier of organic chemistry, fully understand the important role of organic chemistry in various disciplines of chemistry, life, materials, energy, environment and other disciplines, and master the general methods to explore the basic laws of organic chemistry. Guide students to accept the knowledge of organic chemistry, improve the basic quality of organic chemistry.

3. Students are required to be proficient in reading and understanding organic chemistry English textbooks and literature.

4. To guide the students to analyze the function of biomolecules in biology with the knowledge of organic molecules, and to lay a solid foundation for the further study of medical subjects.

3. Basic contents and requirements

(1) Attitude

Students of the program are required the standardized operation habits with rigorous and realistic scientific styles of work.

(2) Basic theory and knowledge

General laws and theories of organic chemistry: atomic orbital theory, molecular orbital theory, valence bond theory, acid-base theory, stereochemistry, structure-property relationships

Nomenclature and isomerism of organic compounds; The main physical properties of organic compounds and their variation laws; The chemical properties and preparation of various organic compounds; The mechanism of organic chemical reactions (free radical substitution, electrophilic substitution, nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition, nucleophilic addition, etc.); Electronic effect and steric effect of organic molecular structure; Mechanism analysis of organic reaction;Analysis of stereochemistry; Synthetic design of organic compounds;Structural characteristics and important reactions of several kinds of biological molecules.

(3) Basic skills

Be familiar with laboratory safety rules, master common accident treatment methods, washing and drying of common instruments, recrystallization operation, simple distillation device, principle and operation of chromatography method, principle and operation of electrophoresis, principle and operation of extraction device, simple organic matter synthesis method.
